Iphone Video Encoding setting and program for windows.

October 22, 2007

So many of you have an ipod touch or an iphone and want to put videos on it.  I have a easy method well kinda….  I think it’s easy enough well let me try to help step by step.

1) Get TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress whether you buy it or not is not my problem LOL (Yes it will encode videos to your ipod from basicly any computer formatted version you have right now.  I recommend installing CCCP codec pack if you are having issues with the TMPGEnc.)

Install the application once your done open it up.

2) You will be at the main menu of the program, at the top there is a button source click it. Click add file, you can select one or more at a time I recommend one till you find the best setting for yourself.  Once you open the file you will see a window pop up called clip additions.  I have to make a few comment here now first.  So if you don’t mind your videos being stretched to fit the iphone/ipod touch screen click the aspect ratio and set it to “display 16:9″ that will basicly let your video stretch to the screen without cutting any of it off.  Also name your click if you want to in clip name. Click ok and now to step 3

3) Click the format tab at the top.  another window will pop up which is called output format selection now under the second folder there should be a template called “Mpeg-4 file output” highlight that one and now to your right now the stream type should be AVC format.  Click select.

4)now here is the hard part…….. well for beginners anyways you should leave all the setting alone that I don’t mention to use at this point.  so first there is a tab that says output container type set that to “ipod video” (basicly refers to .mp4 extension) next for size set the first number to 480 and the second number to 320.  next aspect ratio “display 16:9″  for rate control mode if you want the best quality and smallest size I would recommend “2 pass variable bitrate” for average bitrate I would leave blank and click calculator set what you want the final file size to be and it will do the work for you for the average bitrate now set max bitrate to 1000 now your done the video portion

audio is somewhat easier set the sample rate to 48000 and the bitrate to either 160 or 128 (I recommend 128) leave the rest alone.  also set the output mode at the top if you have more than one file.

Now what I recommend is you save this template and name it whatever you want.

next hit encode tab and select your output folder by hitting browse.

right click on the preview area and select no preview if you don’t care about a preview for encoding and what to get this done as fast as possible now hit the first button all the way to the left and depending on how fast your computer is it will take a certain amount of time to finish go do something else or have a coffee I have a dual core pc and it takes about 1 min to encode 1 min worth of video.  but since your doing 2 passes it will take 2 times the amount of regular time but will give you better quality.

Also…… when your done if your not satisified with the quality results just go back and this time you have your template saved use calculator and set it to a bigger size.

if your wondering about my setting I have it set to 100mb for a 20min worth of video and I’m fine with it.

Well hope that helped and hope it comes in handy for you people.
